Titanium screws: This is a general term that refers to all screws made of titanium as the main material. It contains two categories of pure titanium and titanium alloy.
Pure titanium screws: Usually refers to screws made of commercial pure titanium (such as Gr1, Gr2, Gr4).The larger the number of grades, the higher the strength (Gr4 > Gr2 > Gr1), but the plasticity decreases slightly.
Titanium alloy screws: Refers to screws made of titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V, that is, Gr5).It adds aluminum, vanadium and other elements to titanium to greatly improve its mechanical properties.
Which one to choose depends entirely on your specific needs:
The situation where titanium alloy screws (Gr5) are preferred:
Occasions where high strength, high hardness, and high fatigue strength are required.
For example: aerospace, racing, high-end bicycle racks, high-end outdoor equipment, orthopedic load-bearing implants, precision equipment that needs to be disassembled repeatedly.
The case where pure titanium screws (Gr2/Gr4) are preferred:
Good biocompatibility and corrosion resistance are required, but the strength requirements are not very high.
For example: oral implants, pacemakers, chemical pipelines, fasteners in seawater environments.
The material needs to have good plasticity and formability.
Special note on "biocompatibility”:
In the field of medical devices, both are widely used, but the division of labor is different.Pure titanium (Gr2) is commonly used in areas where it binds to soft tissues (such as the surface of implants) because of its non-alloying element precipitation.Titanium alloy (Gr5/Gr23) is commonly used in parts that need to carry weight (such as joint handles and bone plates) because of its high strength.
There is no “better”, only “more appropriate". In most industrial and high-end consumer fields, the reference to “titanium screws” refers to titanium alloy screws (Gr5) with more comprehensive performance by default. In specific medical and chemical fields, pure titanium screws are accepted by virtue of their characteristic advantages.
